Astronomy picture of the day - 2015 April 3 - Sun and Moon Halo

Explanation: Two pictures captured on April 1 are combined in this creative day and night composite. Separated in time by about 10 hours the images otherwise match, looking along the coast at Östersund Sweden. The relative times were chosen to show the Sun and a nearly full Moon at the same place in the cold, early springtime sky. In the night scene Jupiter also shines above the waterfront lights, while Sun and Moon are both surrounded by a beautiful circular ice halo. The Sun and Moon halos really do align, each with an angular radius of 22 degrees. That radius is a constant, not determined by the brightness of Sun or Moon but only by the hexagonal geometry of atmospheric ice crystals and the reflection and refraction of light. Of course tomorrow, April 4, will find the Sun and Moon on opposite sides of planet Earth for a total lunar eclipse.

Explanation: In one of the brightest parts of Milky Way lies a nebula where some of the oddest things occur. NGC 3372, known as the Great Nebula in Carina, is home to massive stars and changing nebulas. Eta Carinae, the most energetic star in the nebula, was one of the brightest stars in the sky in the 1830s, but then faded dramatically. The Keyhole Nebula, visible left of center, houses several of the most massive stars known and has also changed its appearance. The entire Carina Nebula spans over 300 light years and lies about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation of Carina. Pictured above is the most detailed image of the Carina Nebula ever taken. The controlled colorimage is a composite of 48 high-resolution frames taken by the Hubble Space Telescope two years ago. Wide-field annotated and zoomable image versions are also available.

Aconteceu a 1 de abril de...1873 e 1952
A 31 de março, já tinham sido encontrados sete mortos entre os escombros da carruagem soterrada pelo desabamento de toneladas de terra e pedras sobre a linha férrea do Estoril. No dia de hoje, foram encontrados mais 3 cadáveres. Por se recear a derrocada do farol e da casa do faroleiro da Gibalta, estas construções foram espiadas com um cabo de aço. A circulação de comboios continua interrompida, até finalização dos trabalhos de recolha dos cadáveres e limpeza da via férrea.

Un gigantesque typhon se dirige sur les Philippines
Cinq personnes ont été tuées en Micronésie, dans le Pacifique central, au passage du super-typhon Maysak et l'état d'urgence a été décrété mercredi à Chuuk, principal Etat de la fédération.
Maysak a mis trois jours pour traverser les Etats fédérés de Micronésie (EFM). Accompagné de vents violents soufflant à 260 km/h, il a déferlé sur Chuuk dimanche soir et poursuivi sa course sur le vaste archipel composé de 607 îles avant de frapper l'Etat de Yap mercredi. Il devait faire route ensuite vers les Philippines.

D'après les services météo de Guam, le cyclone devrait demeurer un super-typhon jusqu'à vendredi matin. «La mer va rester traître pendant encore un jour ou deux. N'essayez pas de naviguer d'île en île pendant les prochains jours», ont-ils conseillé aux habitants. Météo-France a prévu que la puissance de ses rafales pourrait atteindre les 350 km/h ce mercredi 1er avril. Maysak devrait cependant perdre de sa force avant d'atteindre les Philippines pendant le week-end.
