Explanation: The Virgo Cluster of Galaxies is the closest cluster of galaxies to our Milky Way Galaxy. The Virgo Cluster is so close that it spans more than 5 degrees on the sky - about 10 times the angle made by a full Moon. With its heart lying about 70 million light years distant, the Virgo Cluster is the nearest cluster of galaxies, contains over 2,000 galaxies, and has a noticeable gravitational pull on the galaxies of the Local Group of Galaxies surrounding ourMilky Way Galaxy. The cluster contains not only galaxies filled with stars but also gas so hot it glows in X-rays. Motions of galaxies in and around clusters indicate that they contain more dark matter than any visible matter we can see.Pictured above, the heart of the Virgo Cluster includes bright Messier galaxies such as Markarian's Eyes on the upper left, M86 just to the upper right of center, M84 on the far right, as well as spiral galaxy NGC 4388 at the bottom right.

O Diário Popular de há 50 anos inseria, no topo da primeira página, ao lado de uma fotografia do general alemão Speidel, que acabara de assumir a chefia das forças da NATO, a seguinte notícia: «Múrcia, 6 - Um gato morreu de desgosto sobre a cova onde estava enterrada uma cadelita de que era inseparável. Depois de esta morrer, o gato recusou-se a comer e, passada uma semana, foram encontrá-lo morto em cima do coval da sua companheira. Esta triste história, que desmente a conhecida hostilidade das duas espécies, é contada por toda a imprensa espanhola.»

Não ficaria melhor no suplemento "Sábado Popular" desse dia, onde normalmente se inseriam curiosidades e passatempos? Desconhecemos o que levou os responsáveis pelo jornal a incluí-la na primeira página; podemos, no entanto, levantar algumas hipóteses. Por um lado, há que considerar que, devido à censura imposta por Salazar, as notícias mais relevantes nem sempre podiam ser publicadas, nomeadamente as relacionadas com a verdadeira situação político-económica do país, e era necessário substituí-las por outros assuntos. Por outro lado, talvez esta notícia mereça, de facto, o destaque que lhe foi dado, pois, ao enaltecer a sã convivência entre animais tradicionalmente hostis, poderia servir de exemplo a alguns seres humanos que hostilizam outros (que até são da mesma espécie !) baseando-se em ignóbeis preconceitos raciais e xenófobos. |

Explanation: Nestled in the Austrian Alps, frozen Lake Ossiach stretches across the foreground of this serene view. Recorded on March 1, the night sky includes a nearly full Moon and bright planet Saturn seen through thin clouds near picture center. It also includes a remarkably bright and colorful moondog or paraselene at the left. Analogous to a sundog or parhelion, the paraselene is produced by moonlight shining through thin, hexagonal-shaped ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. As determined by the ice crystal geometry, the Moon is 22 degrees from the lovely paraselene.

1952 - O paquete Vera Cruz chega ao Rio de Janeiro, na sua viagem inaugural

Às 6 horas da manhã do dia 5 de Abril de 1952, o paquete Vera Cruz - o mais rápido navio de então da minha mercante portuguesa - alcança, na sua viagem inaugural, o Rio de Janeiro, lançando ferro a três milhas da barra. Havia partido, a 20 de Março, da gare marítima da Rocha de Conde de Óbidos, em Lisboa.

Na madrugada do dia 5 de Abril de 1952, um incêndio destroi, quase totalmente, o edifício dos Paços do Concelho de Vila Nova de Famalicão, provocando a perda de numerosos documentos referentes à história e descrição artística do Município.
