From the top of Belém Tower there’s a panoramic view of the Tagus flowing into the Atlantic, and of the entire Belém district. You may see the CCB building, the Discoveries Monument, and 25 de Abril Bridge crossing the river.

Do terraço da Torre de Belém tem-se uma ampla vista do rio a desaguar no Atlântico, e de todo o bairro de Belém. Avista-se o CCB, o Padrão dos Descobrimentos, e a Ponte 25 de Abril a atravessar o Tejo.

NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide

Explanation: Astronomers turn detectives when trying to figure out the cause of startling sights like NGC 1316. Their investigation indicates that NGC 1316 is an enormous elliptical galaxy that started, about 100 million years ago, to devour a smaller spiral galaxy neighbor, NGC 1317, just above it. Supporting evidence includes the dark dust lanes characteristic of a spiral galaxy, and faint swirls and shells of stars and gas visible in this wide and deep image. One thing that remains unexplained is the unusually small globular star clusters, seen as faint dots on the image. Most elliptical galaxies have more and brighter globular clusters than NGC 1316. Yet the observed globulars are too old to have been created by the recent spiral collision. One hypothesis is that these globulars survive from an even earlier galaxy that was subsumed into NGC 1316. Another surprising attribute of NGC 1316, also known as Fornax A, is its giant lobes of gas that glow brightly in radio waves.

Este belo jardim botânico, a poucos metros do Palácio da Ajuda, está muito bem ornamentado com plantas e pedra esculpida. É também um belo miradouro, pois das escadas que dividem os seus dois tabuleiros tem-se uma vista da Ponte 25 de Abril e do Cristo Rei.

Explanation: This was one strange sunset. For one thing, the typically round Sun appeared distorted, geometrically, and multiply layered. For another, some of these layers appeared unusually green. The Sun, of course, was just fine -- its odd appearance was caused entirely by its light refracting in the Earth's atmosphere. When layers of the Earth's atmosphere are unusually warm, layers of the Sun may appear distorted or even seen multiple times. The effect is moststrong nearest sunrise and sunset when terrestrial inversion layers occupy distinct altitudes above the horizon. Different colors of the Sun may also become deflected by significantly different amounts, so that the uppermost superior image may appear momentarily green -- a phenomenon known as a green flash. The featured image was taken in February from Porto Venere, Italy, with San Pietro church situated in the foreground.

Explanation: Early morning risers along Florida's Space Coast, planet Earth, were treated to a launch spectacle on September 2nd. Before dawn an Atlas V rocket rose into still dark skies carrying a US Navy communications satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station into Earth orbit. This minutes long exposure follows the rocket's arc climbing eastward over the Atlantic. As the rocket rises above Earth's shadow, its fiery trail becomes an eerie, noctilucentexhaust plume glinting in sunlight. Of course, the short, bright startrail just above the cloud bank is Venus rising, now appearing in planet Earth's skies as the brilliant morning star.

Eleições do Conselho das Comunidades Portuguesas dia 6 de setembro:

Ato de cidadania das 7 às 19 e mais horas…

ou mais uma forma de desprezo pelas comunidades portuguesas?

A eleição para o CCP – Conselho das Comunidades Portuguesas, terá lugar no próximo domingo, dia 6 de setembro, em todos os postos consulares de Portugal no estrangeiro. As mesas de voto deverão ser organizadas das 7h da manhã até às 19h e mais horas, sendo integradas por grande número de trabalhadores destes mesmos postos assim como por cidadãos portugueses, todos eles conscientes e empenhados.

Na ausência de instruções do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, o STCDE enviou à CNE – Comissão Nacional de Eleições, um pedido de esclarecimento sobre a compensação prevista para os nacionais que integram as mesas de voto, à semelhança do que vem sendo praticado em eleições anteriores, tanto em território nacional como no estrangeiro.

“Transmita-se que não existe previsão legal de atribuição de qualquer compensação financeira ou em tempo no caso da eleição do Conselho das Comunidades Portuguesas para os cidadãos que integrem as mesas de voto, pelo que o exercício dessas funções constituirá neste caso um ato de cidadania.” foi a resposta recebida.

Certo é que, haja ou não compensação financeira (atualmente de 50 €), os trabalhadores estarão a postes no próximo dia 6 de Setembro, para receber todos os eleitores que se deslocarão para participar neste importante ato eleitoral.

No entanto, entendemos denunciar este tratamento discriminatório, como se houvesse eleições de primeira e de segunda categoria. As comunidades portuguesas merecem, os trabalhadores do Estado Português no estrangeiro merecem, e exigem, pelo menos, igualdade de tratamento. A Lei n° 66-A/2007, alterada e republicada pela Lei n° 29/2015, é uma Lei da República Portuguesa.

Apelamos aos mais altos responsáveis em Portugal, a começar pelo Sr. Presidente da República, para que esta situação seja ultrapassada de maneira justa e consentânea com um estado de direito.

Explanation: After sunset on September 1, an exceptionally intense, reddish airglow flooded this Chilean winter night skyscape. Above a sea of clouds and flanking the celestial Milky Way, the airglow seems to ripple and flow across the northern horizon in atmospheric waves. Originating at an altitude similar to aurorae, the luminous airglow is instead due to chemiluminescence, the production of light through chemical excitation. Commonly captured with a greenish tinge by sensitive digital cameras, this reddish airglow emission is from OH molecules and oxygen atoms at extremely low densities and has often been present in southern hemisphere nights during the last few years. On this night it was visible to the eye, but seen without color. Antares and the central Milky Way lie near the top, with bright star Arcturus at left. Straddling the Milky Way close to the horizon are Vega, Deneb, and Altair, known in northern nights as thestars of the Summer Triangle.

Refugiados. Este Mundo é humano?

Refugiados. Todos os dias duas mil pessoas percorrem o trajeto entre a Turquia e a Grécia que Aylan, o curdo de 3 anos, não chegou a fazer. O túnel da Mancha foi invadido ontem por três mil migrantes.

A imagem de uma criança imóvel deitada na areia de uma das mais conhecidas praias da Turquia tornou-se ontem o símbolo mais recente da crise humanitária em que estão envolvidos os milhares e milhares de migrantes ilegais que, todos os dias, tentam a qualquer custo chegar a território europeu.

Envergando uma T-shirt vermelha e calções azuis, a criança, de três anos, estava a bordo de um dos dois barcos que naufragaram ontem, pouco depois de terem partido da costa sudoeste da Turquia em direção à ilha grega de Kos. Nas embarcações seguiam sírios e curdos, dos quais pelo menos cinco crianças.

Os media turcos identificaram a criança como Aylan Kurdi, de uma família curda da cidade de Kobane, e referiram que com Aylan morreu o seu irmão de cinco anos, Galip, que estava no mesmo barco. Os corpos das crianças e de alguns adultos deram à costa na praia de Bodrum, conhecida internacionalmente. No passado, outros corpos tinham surgido nas areias de Bodrum, mas nunca crianças de tão pouca idade.

A imagem de Aylan com a hashtag em turco #KiyiyaVuranInsanlik ("humanidade dá à costa") depressa se tornou a mais partilhada e comentada no Twitter e também noutras redes sociais. Muitos comentários criticavam a passividade das autoridades europeias e dos países por onde passam os migrantes.

No total, seguiriam 23 pessoas nas duas embarcações, das quais 13 perderam a vida, duas conseguiram chegar à costa por terem coletes de salvação e as restantes estavam desaparecidas, temendo as autoridades turcas que estejam mortas. O número de vítimas poderia ter sido muito mais elevado, se a guarda costeira turca não tivesse recolhido 60 migrantes que, na madrugada de ontem se encontravam em dificuldades, pouco depois de terem partido das costas deste país.
