The Wide and Deep Lagoon

Explanation: Ridges of glowing interstellar gas and dark dust clouds inhabit the turbulent, cosmic depths of the Lagoon Nebula. Also known as M8, the bright star forming region is about 5,000 light-years distant. But it still makes for a popular stop on telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius, toward the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. Dominated by the telltale red emission of ionized hydrogen atoms recombining with stripped electrons, this stunning, deep view of the Lagoon is nearly 100 light-years across. Right of center, the bright, compact, hourglass shape is gas ionized and sculpted by energetic radiation and extreme stellar winds from a massive young star. In fact, the many bright stars of open cluster NGC 6530 drift within the nebula, just formed in the Lagoon several million years ago.

Because most of downtown Lisbon was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755, the royal family decided to build their new home on the hill of Ajuda, which escaped the destruction. For this safer location, there were plans for one of the world’s biggest palaces, with gardens cascading down the hill all the way to the river. With the French invasion in the 19th century and the end of monarchy a few decades later, only about one fifth of the original plan was built, but it’s still quite a large palace, with the best royal collection of decorative art.

Quando a Baixa ficou completamente destruída no terramoto de 1755, a família real decidiu construir a sua nova residência na colina da Ajuda, que tinha escapado à destruição. Para este local mais seguro havia planos para um dos maiores palácios do mundo, com jardins a descer até ao Tejo. Com a invasão francesa e o fim da monarquia algumas décadas mais tarde, apenas cerca de um quinto do plano original ficou concluído, mas o que se vê já é um enorme palácio, apresentando grande parte da coleção de artes decorativas da família real.

Explanation: Wandering through this stunning field of view, Mars really is in front of these colorful cosmic clouds. The mosaic contructed from telescopic images is about 5 degrees (10 full moons) across. It captures the planet's position on August 26, over 7 light-minutes from Earth and very near the line-of-sight to bright star Antares and the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex. In the exposure yellow-hued Mars, above and left, is almost matched by Antares, also known as Alpha Scorpii, below center. Globular star cluster M4 shines just right of Antares, but M4 lies some 7,000 light-years away compared to Antares' 500 light-year distance. Slightly closer than Antares, Rho Ophiuchi's bluish starlight is reflected by the dusty molecular clouds near the top of the frame.

It’s one of the world’s biggest palaces, and its construction almost bankrupted the nation at a time when there was no IMF to bail a country out of debt. The gold found in Brazil paid for everything, a grandiose baroque building that doubled as a convent and royal palace. The story of its construction is the background of the classic “Baltasar and Blimunda” by Portugal’s Nobel Prize author José Saramago.

É um dos maiores palácios do mundo, e a sua construção quase levou à falência da nação, num tempo em que ainda não existia FMI para a salvação das finanças de um país. O ouro encontrado no Brasil acabou por pagar por tudo -- um grandioso edifício barroco para servir de convento e de palácio real. A história da sua construção é contada em “Memorial do Convento”, uma das obras clássicas do Nobel português José Saramago.

No Palácio Universitário, localizado na Praia Vermelha, está a Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), também chamada de Universidade do Brasil, a maior universidade federal do país.

O prédio fora construído em 1842, em estilo neoclássico, para ser um hospício, o Hospício de Pedro II, que funcionou entre 1852 e 1944. Em 1949 foi reinaugurado pelo Presidente Eurico Gaspar Dutra para ser a sede da reitoria da Universidade do Brasil.
