Explanation: Well over a thousand galaxies are known members of the Virgo Cluster, the closest large cluster of galaxies to our own local group. In fact, the galaxy cluster is difficult to appreciate all at once because it covers such a large area on the sky. This careful wide-field mosaic of telescopic images clearly records the central region of the Virgo Cluster through faint foreground dust clouds lingering above the plane of our own Milky Way galaxy. The cluster's dominant giant elliptical galaxy M87, is just below and to the left of the frame center. To the right of M87 is a string of galaxies known as Markarian's Chain. A closer examination of the image will reveal many Virgo cluster membergalaxies as small fuzzy patches. Sliding your cursor over the image will label the larger galaxies using NGC catalog designations. Galaxies are also shown with Messier catalog numbers, including M84, M86, and prominent colorful spirals M88, M90, and M91. On average, Virgo Cluster galaxies are measured to be about 48 million light-years away. The Virgo Cluster distance has been used to give an important determination of the Hubble Constant and the scale of the Universe.

Explanation: The setting had been picked out -- all that was needed was an aurora. And late last August, forecasts predicted that an otherwise beautiful night sky would be lit up with auroral green. Jumping into his truck, the astrophotographer approached his secret site -- but only after a five hour drive across the rural Upper Peninsula of Michigan. What he didn't know was that his luck was just beginning. While setting up for the image, a proton arc -- a rare type of aurora -- appeared. The red arc lasted only about 15 minutes, but that was long enough to capture in a 30-second exposure. As the name indicates, proton arcs are caused not by electrons but by more massive protons thatbombard the Earth's atmosphere following an energetic event on the Sun. In the featured image, the yellow lights on the horizon are the city lights of Marquette, Michigan, USA. The blue and yellow rocks in the Lake Superiorforeground are lit by a LED flashlight. Also captured, to the left of the red proton arc, was the band of our Milky Way Galaxy.

Rápidos no gatilho: polícia militar mata centenas de pessoas no Rio de Janeiro
A polícia militar no Rio de Janeiro, que parece seguir uma estratégia de “disparar primeiro e fazer perguntas depois”, está a contribuir para um aumento na taxa de homicídios mas só raramente a sua conduta é investigada e julgada, avalia a Amnistia Internacional ao publicar um novo relatório que analisa novas estatísticas exclusivas e inéditas sobre as mortes decorrentes de intervenção policial, quando está prestes a iniciar-se a contagem decrescente de um ano até aos Jogos Olímpicos de 2016, no Rio de Janeiro.
- O Brasil tem uma das mais elevadas taxas de homicídios do mundo: 56.000 pessoas foram mortas em 2012
- Em 2012, mais de 50% das vítimas de homicídios tinham entre 15 e 29 anos e 77% eram negros
- Foram registados 8.471 casos de mortes às mãos de polícias em serviço no estado do Rio de Janeiro, incluindo 5.132 só na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, entre 2005 e 2014
- O número de mortes ocorridas às mãos da polícia que foram classificadas como “resistência seguida de morte” no Rio de Janeiro equivale a quase 16% do total dos homicídios que aconteceram na cidade nos últimos cinco anos
- Das 220 investigações abertas em 2011 no Rio de Janeiro a casos de mortes pela polícia apenas uma resultou em acusações formuladas contra o agente; e em abril de 2015, 183 investigações continuavam em aberto
O novo relatório, publicado esta segunda-feira, 3 de agosto – e intitulado “Você matou meu filho! - Homicídios cometidos pela polícia militar no Rio de Janeiro” –, revela que pelo menos 16% do total de homicídios registados na cidade nos últimos cinco anos ocorreram às mãos de polícias em serviço: são 1.519 mortes. Só na favela de Acari, na zona norte do Rio de Janeiro, a Amnistia Internacional apurou indícios que sugerem fortemente a ocorrência de execuções extrajudiciais em pelo menos 9 em cada dez mortes causadas pela polícia militar em 2014.
“O Rio de Janeiro é ‘um conto de duas cidades’. Por um lado há o brilho e o glamour criados para impressionar o mundo e, por outro lado, uma cidade marcada por intervenções policiais repressivas que estão a dizimar uma parte significativa de uma geração de homens jovens, negros e pobres”, frisa o diretor-executivo da Amnistia Internacional Brasil, Atila Roque. “A estratégia falhada do Brasil na ‘guerra às drogas’ para solucionar a muito real crise de segurança no país está a produzir enormes efeitos negativos e a deixar na sua esteira um rasto de sofrimento e devastação”, avança...
