Explanation: What's the closest active galaxy to planet Earth? That would be Centaurus A, only 11 million light-years distant. Spanning over 60,000 light-years, the peculiar elliptical galaxy is also known as NGC 5128. Forged in acollision of two otherwise normal galaxies, Centaurus A's fantastic jumble of young blue star clusters, pinkish star forming regions, and imposing dark dust lanes are seen here in remarkable detail. The colorful galaxy portrait is a composite of image data from space- and ground-based telescopes large and small. Near the galaxy's center, left over cosmic debris is steadily being consumed by a central black hole with a billion times the mass of the Sun. As in other active galaxies, that process generates the radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray energy radiated by Centaurus A.

Un prix qui récompense d'ordinaire plutôt des artistes francophones et qui cette année donc consacre une artiste lusophone. «C'est pour montrer aussi l'ouverture de ce prix», déclare Oumou Sangaré.
Putin revela que países do G20 financiam Estado Islâmico
O Presidente russo, Vladimir Putin, declarou na Segunda-feira que pelo menos 40 países financiam o grupo auto-intitulado Estado Islâmico, entre os quais alguns membros do G20
‘O financiamento, como sabemos, provém de 40 países, entre eles vários países do G20”, disse Putin numa conferência de imprensa, na Segunda-feira, na cidade turca de Anatólia.
Putin sublinhou que durante a reunião da cimeira do G20 que decorreu na Turquia deu vários exemplos sobre “o financiamento a várias unidades do Estado Islâmico por pessoas identificáveis”.
Sobre o mesmo assunto, frisou que durante a cimeira foi abordada a necessidade de se cumprir a resolução sobre prevenção ao financiamento do terrorismo adoptada pelo Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas, por iniciativa da Rússia.Putin revelou que apresentou, durante a cimeira, imagens captadas por aviões espiões em que se “mostra claramente a magnitude que atinge o tráfico ilegal de petróleo” por parte do Estado Islâmico.
“As imagens mostram as colunas de camiões cisterna que se estendem por dezenas de quilómetros”, assinalou referindo-se ao tráfico de crude que financia o califado.
Putin disse que depois de terem negado cooperação à Rússia na luta contra o extremismo na Síria, todos os países, incluindo os Estados Unidos, estão agora a tomar consciência de que o terrorismo só se pode combater com o envolvimento de todos os países.
“Os trágicos acontecimentos” ocorridos em Paris “confirmam que temos razão” ao propor uma coligação anti-terrorista internacional, acrescentou Putin. Sendo assim, pediu para que se deixe de discutir a eficácia da operação aérea russa contra as posições do Estado Islâmico na Síria e a reunir esforços contra o terrorismo, em concreto para prevenir os atentados em todo o mundo.
“Lamentavelmente, ninguém está a salvo dos atentados terroristas. Por exemplo, a França estava entre os países que mantinham uma postura muito firme contra o presidente Bashar al Assad”, afirmou.
“Isto salvou Paris dos ataques terroristas? Não”, acrescentou o chefe de Estado russo. “Parte da oposição armada síria considera possível iniciar acções armadas contra o Estado Islâmico caso sejam apoiados pela Força Aérea e nós estamos dispostos a prestar-lhes apoio”, disse.

Astronomy picture of the day - 2015 November 18 - A Sudden Jet on Comet 67P

Explanation: There she blows! A dramatic demonstration of how short-lived some comet jets can be was documented in late July by the robotic Rosetta spacecraft orbiting the nucleus of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Thefeatured animation depicts changes in the rotating comet with three illuminating stills. Although the first frame shows nothing unusual, the second frame shows a sudden strong jet shooting off the 67P's surface only 20 minutes later, while the third frame -- taken 20 minutes after that -- shows but a slight remnant of the once-active jet. As comets near the Sun, they can produce long and beautiful tails that stream across the inner Solar System. How comet jets produce these tails is a topic of research -- helped by images like this. Another recent Rosetta measurement indicates that the water on Earth could not have come from comets like 67P because of significant differences in impurities. Comet 67Pspans about four kilometers, orbits the Sun between Earth and Jupiter, and has been the home for ESA's Rosetta spaceship since 2014 August. Rosetta is currently scheduled to make a slow crash onto Comet 67P's surface in late 2016.

Astronomy picture of the day - 2015 November 17 - The Pelican Nebula in Gas, Dust, and Stars

Explanation: The Pelican Nebula is slowly being transformed. IC 5070, the official designation, is divided from the larger North America Nebula by a molecular cloud filled with dark dust. The Pelican, however, receives much study because it is a particularly active mix of star formation and evolving gas clouds. The featured picture was produced in three specific colors -- light emitted by sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen -- that can help us to better understand these interactions. The light from young energetic stars is slowly transforming the cold gas to hot gas, with the advancing boundary between the two, known as an ionization front, visible in bright orange on the right. Particularly dense tentaclesof cold gas remain. Millions of years from now this nebula might no longer be known as the Pelican, as the balance and placement of stars and gas will surely leave something that appears completely different.

Explanation: There was a shower over Monument Valley -- but not water. Meteors. The featured image -- actually a composite of six exposures of about 30 seconds each -- was taken in 2001, a year when there was a very activeLeonids shower. At that time, Earth was moving through a particularly dense swarm of sand-sized debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, so that meteor rates approached one visible streak per second. The meteors appear parallel because they all fall to Earth from the meteor shower radiant -- a point on the sky towards the constellation of the Lion (Leo). The yearly Leonids meteor shower peaks again this week. Although the Moon's glow should not obstruct the visibility of many meteors, this year's shower will peak with perhaps 15 meteors visible in an hour, a rate which is good but not expected to rival the 2001 Leonids. By the way -- how many meteors can you identify in the featured image?

Um trem de alta velocidade (TGV) descarrilou neste sábado (14/11) nas proximidades de Estrasburgo, no leste da França, deixando ao menos sete mortos e sete feridos. O veículo estava sendo testado, circulando com 49 técnicos a bordo, de acordo com a prefeitura do Bas-Rhin.
Segundo o jornal Le Monde, a causa do acidente seria o excesso de velocidade. Questionado pelo "Le Monde", o grupo diz não ter para dar mais detalhes sobre as razões do acidente. O número exato de pessoas no trem não foi confirmado.
De acordo com o jornal francês, uma equipe de mergulhadores, os helicópteros da segurança civil, e dezenas de veículos de emergência foram enviados para o local.
O secretário de Estado para Transportes, Alain Vidalies, e seu ministro responsável Ségolène Royal, anunciaram que vão até o local.
O acidente ocorreu em uma seção da pista que ainda não estava aberta ao tráfego comercial. Esta é a extensão de 106 km de linha de alta velocidade (LGV) Leste, que será inaugurada comercialmente em abril de 2016. Esta rota leva de Baudrecourt em Lorraine, em Vendenheim, norte de Estrasburgo.
No teste, o trem faria 200 idas e voltas para alcançar a velocidade de 352 km/h, que é 10% mais elevada do que a velocidade de funcionamento (320 km / h) entre setembro de 2015, o final do primeiro trimestre de 2016, indica o gerente de infra-estrutura. De acordo com a rede SNCF, o objetivo é o de estar atentos "para a qualidade da infra-estrutura e o conforto dos passageiros no futuro."
